Description
The White Pigeon Checkerboard Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus hybrid) is a beautifully patterned freshwater fish known for its striking contrast of a bright white base color with bold red or orange maze-like and checkerboard patterns across its body and fins. This selectively bred Discus variety is popular among aquarists for its elegant appearance, graceful movement, and calm nature, making it a standout in any planted aquarium.
Habitat and Behavior
Though a domesticated strain, all Discus originate from the soft, warm, and slow-moving blackwater tributaries of the Amazon Basin. Like others in its family, the White Pigeon Checkerboard Discus is peaceful, shy, and social, best kept in groups of at least five or more to establish a stable social structure.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, this Discus thrives in a well-maintained tank with soft, slightly acidic water, gentle filtration, and warm temperatures. The ideal setup includes tall plants, driftwood, shaded areas, and open swimming space. Due to their sensitivity, excellent water quality and stability are essential. They do well with other Discus and peaceful community fish, such as rummy nose tetras, cardinal tetras, and Corydoras catfish.
Size and Suitability
Reaching up to 15–20 cm (6–8 inches), the White Pigeon Checkerboard Discus is best suited for medium to large aquariums. Its dazzling pattern, calm demeanor, and graceful presence make it a favorite for Discus keepers and aquascaping enthusiasts alike.
