Description

The Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is a lively and colorful freshwater fish native to the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Borneo. Recognized for its bold black vertical stripes on an orange-gold body and red-tinged fins, this active schooling fish adds excitement and movement to aquariums.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Tiger Barbs inhabit soft, acidic waters with moderate currents, where they forage for small invertebrates, algae, and organic debris. They are highly social and active, often engaging in playful chasing behaviors. However, they can be nippy, especially toward fish with long or flowing fins.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Tiger Barb thrives in a well-planted tank with soft substrate, open swimming areas, and moderate water flow. They should be kept in groups of at least six or more to minimize fin-nipping tendencies and encourage natural schooling behavior. Ideal tankmates include fast-moving fish, such as other barbs, danios, and larger tetras, while long-finned species like bettas and angelfish should be avoided.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 5–7 cm (2–2.5 inches), the Tiger Barb is best suited for medium-sized aquariums. Its bold coloration, energetic schooling behavior, and social interactions make it a dynamic and visually striking addition to active aquarium setups.
