Description

The Three-Spot Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus), also known as the Blue Gourami, is a popular and hardy freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers, swamps, and lakes of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. This species gets its name from the two dark spots along its body and the “third spot,” which is its eye. Selective breeding has also produced color variants like gold, blue, and opaline. In the wild, Three-Spot Gouramis inhabit areas with dense vegetation and soft substrates. They are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. Like other gouramis, they possess a labyrinth organ, enabling them to breathe atmospheric air and survive in low-oxygen environments. In aquariums, the Three-Spot Gourami thrives in a well-decorated tank with plants, driftwood, and rocks to mimic its natural habitat. It is generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially males, so it is best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.Growing up to 10-15 cm (4-6 inches), the Three-Spot Gourami is an excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels. Its adaptability, ease of care, and gentle beauty make it a wonderful addition to community tanks.
