Description

Synodontis alberti (Albert’s Synodontis)

The Synodontis alberti, also known as Albert’s Synodontis, is a rare and eye-catching species of upside-down catfish native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. This species is valued for its bold patterning, peaceful temperament, and unique swimming behavior, often gliding along surfaces upside-down or at odd angles as it forages.

Habitat and Behavior

In the wild, S. alberti inhabits slow-moving, shaded sections of rivers and streams, particularly those with muddy or sandy bottoms, submerged roots, and leaf litter. It is a nocturnal species, spending daylight hours hiding in crevices or under driftwood, becoming more active at dusk and night. Synodontis alberti is omnivorous, feeding on a variety of invertebrates, detritus, and plant material.

This catfish is known for being social and peaceful, often tolerating others of its kind and doing well in community setups with similarly tempered tankmates.

Aquarium Care

Albert’s Synodontis thrives in aquariums with lots of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and rockwork. A dimly lit tank with soft, sandy substrate and gentle water flow best mimics its natural environment. Though largely nocturnal, it will become more confident and visible with consistent feeding and comfortable surroundings. It coexists well with peaceful cichlids, tetras, barbs, and other medium to large community fish.

Size and Suitability

Synodontis alberti typically grows to about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in captivity. Its manageable size, calm nature, and striking, spotted coloration make it a desirable addition to African-themed or general community tanks.
