Description
The Six-Bar Distichodus (Distichodus sexfasciatus), also known as the Six-Banded Distichodus, is a large and striking freshwater fish native to the rivers and floodplains of Central Africa, particularly in the Congo River Basin. It is named for the bold, dark vertical bands running across its golden-orange body, creating a dramatic and eye-catching appearance.
In the wild, Six-Bar Distichodus inhabit slow-moving and moderately flowing waters with sandy or rocky substrates and abundant vegetation. They are omnivorous, feeding on plant matter, algae, small invertebrates, and detritus, making them active grazers in their natural habitat.
In aquariums, the Six-Bar Distichodus requires a very large tank with open swimming space, sturdy plants, and hiding spots created with driftwood and rocks. While juveniles are relatively peaceful, adults can become territorial and aggressive, particularly toward other similarly shaped fish. They should be housed with robust, fast-moving tankmates such as large cichlids, catfish, or other similarly sized fish.
Growing up to 50-75 cm (20-30 inches), the Six-Bar Distichodus is best suited for large home aquariums or public display tanks. Its impressive size, bold coloration, and active nature make it a captivating choice for experienced aquarists who can provide the space and care it requires.
