Description
The Silver Dollar (Metynnis spp.) is a popular and visually striking freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and tributaries of South America, particularly in the Amazon Basin. It is named for its flat, round body that gleams like a large coin, making it a standout species in any aquarium. In the wild, Silver Dollars are herbivorous fish that inhabit densely vegetated areas with soft substrates. They graze on plant matter, algae, and occasionally small invertebrates, contributing to their role as natural ecosystem cleaners. In aquariums, Silver Dollars thrive in spacious tanks with a minimum of 300 liters (80 gallons) to allow for their active swimming behavior. They prefer tanks with open swimming areas and decor such as driftwood, rocks, and hardy plants. However, due to their herbivorous diet, they may nibble on softer plants, so plastic or tougher live plants like Anubias are recommended.Silver Dollars are peaceful schooling fish and do best in groups of five or more. They are ideal tankmates for other non-aggressive, medium to large-sized species, such as tetras, angelfish, or larger cichlids.Growing up to 15-20 cm (6-8 inches), Silver Dollars are known for their shimmering appearance and energetic nature, making them an excellent choice for aquarists with larger tanks. Their manageable care requirements and striking beauty make them a favorite addition to peaceful community aquariums.
