The Bala Shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus), also known as the Silver Shark, is a sleek and elegant freshwater fish native to the rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Despite its name, it is not a true shark but gets its name from its torpedo-shaped body and shark-like dorsal fin. Its metallic silver body, accented with black-edged fins, makes it a favorite among aquarists seeking a peaceful and active species.In the wild, the Bala Shark inhabits fast-flowing rivers and floodplains with clear water and sandy or rocky substrates. It is an omnivore, feeding on insects, crustaceans, plant matter, and algae.In aquariums, the Bala Shark requires a spacious tank of at least 400 liters, as it is an active swimmer and can grow up to 35 cm (14 inches). It thrives in a well-decorated tank with plenty of open swimming space, soft substrates, and sturdy decor such as rocks and driftwood. Bala Sharks are peaceful and do best in groups of five or more, which helps reduce stress and mimic their natural schooling behavior.
