Description
The Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) is a majestic and ancient freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and swamps of South America, particularly in the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo basins. Renowned for its elongated, streamlined body and metallic silver sheen, this species exudes elegance as it glides through the water. In the wild, the Silver Arowana is a surface-dwelling predator, feeding on insects, small fish, and even birds or reptiles that it catches by leaping out of the water. Its remarkable ability to jump makes it an agile and skilled hunter, earning it the nickname “monkey fish” in some regions. In aquariums, the Silver Arowana requires a very large tank with a secure lid, as it is an excellent jumper. The setup should include ample open swimming space, subdued lighting, and gentle water flow to mimic its natural habitat. While generally peaceful, it may view smaller fish as prey, so tankmates should be large, robust, and non-aggressive.Capable of growing up to 90 cm (3 feet) or more, the Silver Arowana is best suited for experienced aquarists with the space and resources to provide for this magnificent species. Its striking appearance and graceful behavior make it a true centerpiece for any large aquarium.
