Description
The Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus), also known as the Gray Bichir or Dinosaur Eel, is a fascinating and ancient species native to freshwater habitats across West and Central Africa. This hardy and adaptable fish is found in rivers, floodplains, and marshes, where it thrives in slow-moving or stagnant waters with soft substrates and plenty of cover.
The Senegal Bichir has a long, slender body with a pale gray to olive coloration, complemented by a series of dorsal finlets that give it a prehistoric, almost dragon-like appearance. It is a bottom-dweller and a nocturnal predator, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, insects, and other meaty foods. It is also equipped with the ability to breathe atmospheric air, allowing it to survive in low-oxygen environments.
In aquariums, the Senegal Bichir requires a large tank with a soft substrate, plenty of hiding places like rocks, driftwood, and caves, and a secure lid to prevent escapes. While generally peaceful, it may consume smaller tankmates, so it is best kept with similarly sized or larger fish. This unique and resilient species is a favorite among aquarists who enjoy unusual and prehistoric-looking fish.
