Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Salvini Cichlids inhabit slow-moving waters with submerged tree roots, rocky formations, and sandy bottoms, where they establish territories and prey on small fish, invertebrates, and plant matter. They are highly territorial and aggressive, especially during breeding, making them best suited for tanks with similarly robust fish.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Salvini Cichlid thrives in a well-decorated tank with rocky caves, driftwood, and open swimming areas to mimic its natural environment. Due to its territorial nature, it should be housed with other large, semi-aggressive cichlids, large catfish, or similarly sized tankmates. It is not suitable for peaceful community tanks as it may display aggression toward smaller or weaker fish.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 18–22 cm (7–9 inches), the Salvini Cichlid is best suited for large aquariums with strong filtration and stable water conditions. Its bold colors, feisty personality, and territorial behaviors make it a challenging but rewarding species for experienced cichlid keepers.
