Description
The Red Zebra Cichlid (Metriaclima estherae), also known as the Red Zebra Mbuna, is a bold and vibrant freshwater species native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi in East Africa. This mbuna cichlid is known for its striking red to orange coloration, active nature, and territorial behavior, making it a popular choice among African cichlid enthusiasts.
In the wild, Red Zebra Cichlids inhabit rocky environments where they graze on algae and small invertebrates. As a typical mbuna, they are highly territorial and prefer to establish dominance within rocky caves and crevices.
In aquariums, the Red Zebra Cichlid thrives in a well-structured setup with plenty of rocks, caves, and hiding spots to create territorial boundaries. They are best kept in groups with other mbuna cichlids of similar size and temperament. Due to their aggressive nature, they should not be housed with peaceful community fish but rather with other robust African cichlids that can hold their own.
Growing to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches), the Red Zebra Cichlid is best suited for medium to large aquariums with strong filtration and frequent water changes. Its bright coloration, energetic behavior, and bold personality make it a standout species in African cichlid tanks, particularly for aquarists looking to create a visually dynamic and active mbuna setup.
