Description

The Red Tiger Parrot Cichlid is a striking hybrid freshwater fish, selectively bred for its deep red base coloration accented with bold black vertical barring, resembling the pattern of a tiger. A variant of the popular Blood Parrot Cichlid, the Red Tiger Parrot combines the rounded body and beak-like mouth typical of parrots with the vibrant, wild look of a striped cichlid, making it a standout in any aquarium.

Habitat and Behavior

As a man-made hybrid, the Red Tiger Parrot does not exist in the wild but is believed to originate from crossbreeding Central American cichlids such as the Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) and Redhead Cichlid (Paraneetroplus synspilus). It is semi-aggressive but generally peaceful, especially when compared to other large cichlids. Red Tiger Parrots are social, curious, and often interact with their owners, making them a favorite in large community cichlid tanks.

Aquarium Care

The Red Tiger Parrot Cichlid thrives in a well-aquascaped tank with caves, driftwood, smooth rocks, and soft substrate, allowing them space to explore and claim territory. Although they may rearrange decor and lightly dig, they are less destructive than some other large cichlids. Strong filtration is a must, as they produce a significant bio-load. While usually peaceful, they can become territorial during spawning, so suitable tankmates include other semi-aggressive cichlids, larger catfish, or robust community fish.

Size and Suitability

Reaching up to 20–25 cm (8–10 inches), the Red Tiger Parrot requires a large tank with stable water parameters. Its fiery coloration, unique body shape, and engaging behavior make it a favorite for aquarists seeking a colorful and personable centerpiece fish.
