Description
The Red Tiger Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus variant) is a captivating and colorful freshwater cichlid native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in South America. This striking fish features a dark base color adorned with vivid red or orange tiger-like patterns, making it one of the most visually appealing Oscar variations.
Known for its intelligence and interactive behavior, the Red Tiger Oscar often recognizes its keeper and can even be hand-fed. In the wild, it preys on small fish, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, its diet should include high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods, and occasional treats like shrimp or worms to maintain its vibrant coloration and health.
This robust species requires a large aquarium with a minimum size of 300 liters, as it can grow up to 30-35 cm. The tank should include a sandy substrate, plenty of open swimming space, and sturdy decor such as rocks and driftwood for shelter. While generally peaceful, the Red Tiger Oscar can become territorial, especially during breeding, and should be housed with similarly sized, hardy tankmates. With proper care, this stunning cichlid can thrive for over a decade, becoming the centerpiece of any aquarium.
