Description
The Red Terror (Cichlasoma festae), also known as the Festae Cichlid, is a bold and striking freshwater species native to the rivers and streams of Ecuador and northern Peru. This cichlid is renowned for its vivid red coloration with black vertical bars and shimmering green or blue highlights, making it one of the most visually impressive species in the cichlid family.
The Red Terror is a highly territorial and aggressive fish, particularly during breeding. In the wild, it inhabits slow-moving rivers and streams with rocky substrates and plenty of hiding spots, feeding on smaller fish, insects, and other invertebrates.
In aquariums, this species requires a large tank of at least 400 liters to accommodate its size and territorial nature, as it can grow up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length. The tank should have a sandy substrate, robust decor like rocks and driftwood for hiding spots, and sufficient open swimming space. This cichlid thrives in warm water with stable parameters and good filtration. Tankmates should be chosen carefully, as the Red Terror’s aggression makes it best suited for experienced aquarists and single-species tanks or with other large, robust fish.
With its vibrant appearance and dynamic personality, the Red Terror is a rewarding challenge for aquarists seeking a show-stopping centerpiece fish.
