Description

The Red Tail Giant Gourami (Osphronemus laticlavius) is a striking and impressive freshwater species native to the rivers, lakes, and swamps of Borneo and Sumatra in Southeast Asia. Known for its large size and vivid red tail, this gourami is highly prized for its commanding presence and vibrant coloration. As juveniles, Red Tail Giant Gouramis feature a silvery or pale gray body that darkens with age, with the tail fin gradually developing its brilliant red hue. In the wild, this species inhabits calm waters with dense vegetation, feeding on plant material, fruits, algae, and occasionally small invertebrates, making it an omnivorous grazer. In aquariums, this species requires a very large tank with plenty of open swimming space and robust decor like driftwood and rocks for structure. Hardy plants or artificial plants can also be added, but be mindful of its tendency to nibble on vegetation. While generally peaceful, adult Red Tail Giant Gouramis may exhibit territorial behavior, especially in smaller spaces or during breeding.Capable of growing up to 50-70 cm (20-28 inches), the Red Tail Giant Gourami is a true centerpiece fish best suited for experienced aquarists with the space and resources to accommodate its size. Its vibrant appearance, hardy nature, and bold personality make it a standout addition to a large, well-maintained aquarium.
