Description
The Red Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis – red variant) is a vibrant and hardy freshwater species known for its flowing fins, deep red coloration, and bold personality. A selectively bred variant of the classic Paradise Fish, this striking fish is both beautiful and resilient, making it a popular choice for aquarists looking for something colorful and slightly off the beaten path.
Habitat and Behavior
Originally found in the slow-moving streams, rice paddies, and ponds of East and Southeast Asia, Paradise Fish are labyrinth fish, meaning they can breathe atmospheric air and thrive in low-oxygen environments. The Red variant maintains the wild species’ temperament—curious, active, and often territorial—especially among males.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Red Paradise Fish thrives in a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, open swimming space, and a gentle current. Males are territorial and can be aggressive toward each other, so they are best kept singly unless the tank is large and carefully managed. Tankmates should be robust, fast-moving, or semi-aggressive, as this species may bully slow or long-finned fish like Bettas or fancy guppies.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches), the Red Paradise Fish is ideal for medium-sized aquariums and suits aquarists who want a colorful, low-maintenance fish with personality. Their hardiness and ability to tolerate a range of water conditions make them suitable for both beginners and more experienced keepers.
