Description

The Red African Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara spp.) is a striking freshwater species native to the sandy and rocky regions of Lake Malawi in East Africa. Known for its brilliant red coloration and shimmering iridescence, this cichlid is a popular choice for aquarists looking to add vibrant color to their aquarium.
In the wild, Red Peacock Cichlids inhabit sandy-bottomed areas with scattered rocks, where they use their specialized sensory pores to detect small invertebrates hidden in the substrate. Unlike the more aggressive mbuna cichlids, Peacocks are generally peaceful and prefer open swimming areas.
In aquariums, the Red African Peacock Cichlid thrives in a well-structured tank with a sandy substrate, rock formations, and plenty of open swimming space. While they are less aggressive than mbuna cichlids, males may become territorial, especially during breeding. They are best housed with other non-aggressive to semi-aggressive African cichlids, such as other Peacocks or Haps.
Growing to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches), the Red African Peacock Cichlid is best suited for medium to large aquariums. Its bold red hues, graceful swimming, and interactive personality make it a standout addition for aquarists looking to create a colorful and dynamic Lake Malawi setup.
