The Rainbow Shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum), also known as the Albino Shark or Whitefin Shark, is a popular and visually striking freshwater fish native to the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It is easily recognized by its sleek, dark gray to black body and vibrant red or orange fins, which create a dramatic and eye-catching contrast.In the wild, Rainbow Sharks inhabit fast-moving rivers and streams with rocky substrates and plenty of vegetation. They are bottom-dwelling omnivores that graze on algae, plant matter, and small invertebrates, playing an important role in maintaining the ecosystem’s balance.In aquariums, the Rainbow Shark requires a spacious tank with ample swimming room, a soft substrate, and decor such as rocks, driftwood, and caves to establish territories. While juveniles are relatively peaceful, adults can become territorial, especially toward fish of similar size, shape, or behavior. Ideal tankmates include fast-swimming, mid-to-top-dwelling species that can avoid potential conflict.Growing up to 15 cm (6 inches), the Rainbow Shark is a hardy and active species suitable for aquarists with some experience. Its bold appearance, energetic behavior, and algae-grazing habits make it a valuable and striking addition to medium to large aquariums.
