Description
The Pintail Chalceus (Chalceus erythrurus) is a sleek and energetic freshwater fish native to the fast-flowing rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. Known for its shimmering silver body, large reflective scales, and distinctive elongated red or pink tail fin, this species is a striking addition to large aquariums.
In the wild, Pintail Chalceus inhabit fast-moving waters with rocky substrates and overhanging vegetation. They are opportunistic carnivores, feeding on small fish, insects, and crustaceans. Their powerful swimming ability and natural tendency to leap out of the water make them highly agile predators.
In aquariums, the Pintail Chalceus thrives in a well-oxygenated tank with strong water flow, open swimming areas, and a secure, tightly fitted lid to prevent jumping. While generally peaceful, they can be aggressive toward smaller fish, so they should be housed with larger, fast-moving tankmates such as barbs, silver dollars, and other robust characins.
Growing to about 25-30 cm (10-12 inches), the Pintail Chalceus is best suited for large aquariums with plenty of swimming space. Its metallic sheen, vibrant red tail, and energetic nature make it a captivating choice for experienced aquarists looking for an active and visually striking fish.
