Description

The Pictus Catfish (Pimelodus pictus) is a sleek and highly active freshwater species native to the fast-flowing rivers of South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. Recognized for its silvery body covered in black spots and its long, elegant barbels, this catfish is a popular choice among aquarists looking for an energetic and visually striking bottom-dweller.
In the wild, Pictus Catfish inhabit sandy and rocky riverbeds, using their sensitive barbels to locate small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic debris. Unlike many catfish species, they are fast swimmers and remain active throughout the day, often darting around the tank rather than staying hidden.
In aquariums, the Pictus Catfish thrives in a well-decorated tank with a soft, sandy substrate and plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and plants, to provide shelter when needed. They prefer moderate to strong water flow to mimic their natural habitat and require clean, well-oxygenated water. While generally peaceful, they are best kept with similarly sized, fast-moving tankmates, as they may see very small fish as prey.
Growing to about 10-12 cm (4-5 inches), the Pictus Catfish is a manageable size for medium to large aquariums.
