Otocinclus, commonly known as Otos or the Ottos, is a genus of small, peaceful freshwater catfish native to the rivers and streams of South America, particularly in Brazil, Argentina, and Peru. These fish are known for their excellent algae-eating capabilities, making them a popular choice among aquarists who need natural algae control in their tanks.Typically, Otocinclus species have a small, slender body that grows to about 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) in length, with a transparent or light brownish body and dark markings along their sides. They are often seen grazing on algae, biofilm, and other organic matter found on rocks, plants, and tank surfaces. Otos are considered one of the best ‘cleaner fish’ for algae control, especially in smaller aquariums.In aquariums, Otocinclus thrive in well-planted tanks with gentle filtration and stable water parameters. They are peaceful and social fish, preferring to be kept in groups of at least five or six to feel secure and exhibit natural schooling behavior.
