Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Orange Chromides are found in brackish and freshwater environments, often in vegetation-rich shallows where they graze on algae, biofilm, and small invertebrates. They are peaceful and social, often seen in small shoals or pairs, and display excellent parental care, frequently mouthbrooding or guarding fry in leaf litter or rocky crevices.
Aquarium Care
In the aquarium, the Orange Chromide thrives in slightly brackish water (though it can adapt to freshwater if stable), with moderate lighting, soft substrate, and plant cover. It is a great choice for brackish community tanks or peaceful cichlid setups, and pairs well with similarly sized fish like mollies, glassfish, or gobies. While peaceful, they can become territorial during breeding, especially in small tanks.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 7–8 cm (3 inches), the Orange Chromide is ideal for medium-sized aquariums and a favorite for aquarists looking for colorful fish suited to slightly salty or hard water conditions. Its hardiness, vivid color, and gentle demeanor make it suitable even for beginners.
