The Ocellated Catfish (Synodontis ocellifer) is a hardy and peaceful freshwater species native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of West Africa, particularly in the Niger, Senegal, and Chad River Basins. It is known for its smooth body adorned with dark spots (“ocelli”), which help it blend into its surroundings. Like other Synodontis species, it has long whisker-like barbels that it uses to forage along the bottom.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Ocellated Catfish inhabit sandy and rocky riverbeds, where they scavenge for food among submerged logs, vegetation, and organic debris. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to search for small invertebrates and plant matter while resting in caves or shaded areas during the day.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Ocellated Catfish thrives in a well-structured tank with plenty of hiding spots, driftwood, and soft substrate to support its natural foraging behavior. It is social and does well in small groups, though it can also be kept singly in a peaceful community tank. Due to its calm nature, it can coexist with medium to large community fish, peaceful cichlids, and other bottom-dwellers.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 25–30 cm (10–12 inches), the Ocellated Catfish is best suited for large aquariums. Its spotted pattern, gentle temperament, and nocturnal habits make it a unique and rewarding species for aquarists who appreciate bottom-dwelling catfish.
