Description
The Norman’s Lampeye (Poropanchax normani), also known as the Norman’s Lampeye Killifish, is a small and peaceful freshwater species native to the slow-moving streams, swamps, and shallow pools of West Africa, particularly in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Benin. This fish is named for its striking blue, luminescent “lampeye”, which reflects light beautifully, giving it a glowing appearance under aquarium lighting.
In the wild, Norman’s Lampeyes inhabit soft, acidic waters with dense vegetation, where they form small shoals and feed on tiny invertebrates and insect larvae. They are surface dwellers that prefer calm environments with floating plants.
In aquariums, the Norman’s Lampeye thrives in a well-planted tank with a soft substrate, floating plants, and gentle filtration to replicate its natural habitat. They are peaceful schooling fish, best kept in groups of six or more, and make excellent tankmates for other small, non-aggressive species such as pygmy Corydoras, small rasboras, and shrimp.
Growing to about 3–4 cm (1.5 inches), Norman’s Lampeye is a perfect addition to nano aquariums or peaceful community tanks. Its glowing blue eyes, social nature, and graceful movements make it a visually stunning and low-maintenance fish, ideal for aquarists looking for a unique schooling species.
