Description
The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is one of the most popular and iconic freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby, known for its vibrant, iridescent blue and red coloration. Native to the clearwater and blackwater streams of the Amazon Basin in South America, particularly in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, this small, peaceful fish adds a brilliant splash of color to any aquarium. In the wild, Neon Tetras inhabit slow-moving, densely vegetated waters with soft, acidic conditions and dim lighting due to overhanging foliage. They are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, algae, and organic matter. In aquariums, Neon Tetras thrive in a well-planted tank with subdued lighting, a soft substrate, and plenty of hiding spots created with driftwood, rocks, and plants to mimic their natural environment. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six, as this helps reduce stress and encourages natural, synchronized swimming behavior. They are peaceful and do well with other small, non-aggressive tankmates such as Corydoras, dwarf gouramis, and other small tetras.Growing to about 3-4 cm (1.5 inches), Neon Tetras are perfect for small to medium-sized aquariums. Their stunning colors, peaceful nature, and active schooling behavior make them a favorite choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists, especially in community and planted tanks.
