Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Peacock Cichlids inhabit sandy-bottomed regions with scattered rocks, where they use their specialized sensory pores to detect small invertebrates hidden in the substrate. Unlike the more aggressive mbuna cichlids, Peacocks are less territorial and prefer open-water swimming with occasional sand-sifting behavior.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Marble African Peacock thrives in a well-structured tank with sandy substrate, rock formations, and open swimming areas. While they are less aggressive than mbuna cichlids, males can be territorial during breeding. They should be housed with other non-aggressive to semi-aggressive Lake Malawi cichlids, such as other Peacocks or Haplochromis species.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches), the Marble African Peacock Cichlid is best suited for medium to large aquariums with strong filtration and stable water conditions. Its eye-catching marbled coloration, active swimming behavior, and interactive personality make it a standout species for African cichlid enthusiasts.
