Description
The Longfin Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya variant) is a beautiful and peaceful freshwater fish known for its elongated, flowing fins and deep red coloration in males, while females display a more subdued golden-pink hue. This selectively bred variety of the Cherry Barb adds elegance to aquariums while maintaining the species’ active and social nature.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Cherry Barbs are native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of Sri Lanka, where they inhabit soft, slightly acidic waters with dense vegetation. They are omnivorous schooling fish, feeding on small insects, algae, and organic matter. Males develop a deeper red color when in breeding condition or when kept in optimal environments.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Longfin Cherry Barb thrives in a well-planted tank with soft substrate, open swimming areas, and moderate water flow. They are best kept in groups of at least six, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural schooling behavior. Their peaceful temperament makes them excellent tankmates for other small, non-aggressive species such as tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 5 cm (2 inches), the Longfin Cherry Barb is an ideal species for small to medium-sized aquariums. Its elegant fins, active schooling behavior, and vibrant coloration make it a captivating and beginner-friendly choice for community tanks.
