Description
The Leopard Cactus Pleco (Pseudacanthicus sp. L600), also known as the L600 Cactus Pleco, is a striking and highly sought-after freshwater catfish native to the Rio Tocantins in Brazil. Known for its bold leopard-like pattern of dark spots on a reddish-brown or golden body, this pleco is admired for both its impressive appearance and its territorial nature.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Leopard Cactus Plecos inhabit fast-moving, rocky riverbeds with strong currents, where they take shelter among crevices and submerged driftwood. They are territorial and aggressive toward other bottom-dwelling fish, particularly other plecos, and prefer to establish their own space within a tank.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Leopard Cactus Pleco thrives in a large, well-oxygenated tank with plenty of caves, driftwood, and rock formations to establish its territory. Strong filtration and high water flow are essential to replicate its natural riverine habitat. Due to its aggressive and territorial nature, it should be housed with large, robust tankmates and not with other plecos unless the tank is exceptionally spacious.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 30–35 cm (12–14 inches), the Leopard Cactus Pleco is best suited for large aquariums with excellent filtration and frequent water changes. Its striking leopard-like pattern, territorial personality, and unique armored body make it a fascinating but challenging species for experienced aquarists.
