Description

The Kribensis Cichlid (Pelvicachromis pulcher), also known as the Rainbow Krib or simply Krib, is a colorful and peaceful dwarf cichlid native to the slow-moving rivers, streams, and coastal creeks of West Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Cameroon. Known for its vibrant mix of purples, yellows, reds, and iridescent blues, and the striking red belly of the female, the Kribensis is a favorite among aquarists for its beauty, personality, and easy care.

Habitat and Behavior

In the wild, Kribensis Cichlids are found in soft, slightly acidic waters with dense vegetation and shelter. They are omnivorous and highly adaptable, often seen digging or grazing along the substrate. Kribs are peaceful for cichlids, though they can become territorial during breeding, especially when guarding their fry.

Aquarium Care

In aquariums, the Kribensis Cichlid does best in a well-decorated tank with caves, plants, and hiding spots. A soft substrate encourages natural digging behavior. They are excellent for planted community aquariums and pair well with peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and other dwarf cichlids. When breeding, it’s best to provide a cave or flowerpot as a spawning site and keep an eye on territorial behavior.

Size and Suitability

Growing to about 7–10 cm (3–4 inches), Kribensis are well-suited for small to medium-sized aquariums. Their vibrant coloration, interesting breeding behavior, and peaceful nature make them a wonderful choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
