Description

The Jaguar Cichlid (Parachromis managuensis), also known as the Managuense Cichlid or Jaguar Guapote, is a large, powerful, and highly territorial freshwater fish native to the lakes and slow-moving rivers of Central America, especially in Nicaragua and Honduras. Named for its bold, jaguar-like black spotting on a silvery or golden body, this cichlid is admired for its striking appearance and dominant personality—but it is best suited to experienced fishkeepers.

Habitat and Behavior

In the wild, Jaguar Cichlids inhabit muddy-bottomed lakes and warm, low-flow waters, where they are ambush predators that feed on smaller fish, insects, and crustaceans. They are highly territorial and aggressive, especially when breeding, and will fiercely defend their space. Males are generally larger and more colorful than females and display increased aggression as they mature.

Aquarium Care

In captivity, the Jaguar Cichlid needs a very large, well-filtered aquarium with strong water flow and plenty of hiding places created with rocks, driftwood, and durable décor. Due to their aggressive and predatory nature, they should only be housed with other large, robust fish that can defend themselves. They are not suitable for community tanks and may dig and rearrange tank decorations.

Size and Suitability

Reaching up to 35–40 cm (14–16 inches), the Jaguar Cichlid requires a spacious aquarium and dedicated care. Their bold markings, high intelligence, and commanding presence make them a true showpiece for aquarists with the space and experience to manage large, aggressive species.
