Description

The Green Tiger Loach (Syncrossus hymenophysa), also known as the Tiger Loach or Green Tiger Botia, is a bold and active freshwater species native to the fast-moving rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Recognized for its elongated body, greenish-bronze sheen, and bold black vertical stripes, this loach is a striking and highly energetic addition to large aquariums.

Habitat and Behavior

In the wild, Green Tiger Loaches inhabit fast-flowing, well-oxygenated waters with rocky and sandy substrates, where they forage for small invertebrates and organic debris. They are semi-aggressive and highly territorial, often forming complex dominance hierarchies within groups. While social with their own kind, they can be boisterous and nippy toward more passive tankmates.

Aquarium Care

In aquariums, the Green Tiger Loach thrives in a spacious tank with a soft substrate, plenty of hiding spots, caves, driftwood, and smooth rock formations to create natural territorial boundaries. They require highly oxygenated water and strong filtration to mimic their native habitat. To prevent aggression, they should be kept in groups of at least five or more, as this helps distribute dominant behaviors and reduces stress. Due to their territorial nature, they are best housed with robust, fast-moving fish and should not be kept with slow or long-finned species.

Size and Suitability

Growing to about 25–30 cm (10–12 inches), the Green Tiger Loach requires a large aquarium with strong water flow. Its bold pattern, social dynamics, and playful yet aggressive nature make it a challenging but rewarding species for experienced aquarists looking for an active bottom-dweller.
