Description
The Green Chromide (Etroplus suratensis) is a brackish to freshwater cichlid native to the coastal lakes, estuaries, and rivers of India and Sri Lanka. Known for its silvery-green body with vertical dark bands, this peaceful yet large-growing species is one of the few cichlids naturally found in South Asia. It’s highly adaptable and often seen in both wild and aquaculture settings.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Green Chromides inhabit brackish and slightly salty coastal backwaters, though they can also survive in pure freshwater. They are typically found in vegetated shallows, where they graze on algae, detritus, and small invertebrates. They are social fish and do well in groups, especially when young.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, Green Chromides thrive in well-aerated tanks with a sandy or fine gravel substrate, ample swimming space, and aquatic plants tolerant to hard or slightly brackish water. They appreciate slightly salty water (around 1–2 ppt salinity) but can adapt to full freshwater with stable parameters. These fish are generally peaceful, making them suitable for community tanks with other brackish or large, non-aggressive species.
Size and Suitability
Green Chromides can grow to 30 cm (12 inches) in length, so they require large aquariums with good filtration and regular water changes. Their peaceful temperament, algae-grazing behavior, and adaptability make them suitable for brackish biotope setups or large planted tanks.
