The Goldfin Borleyi Hap (Copadichromis borleyi “Goldfin”) is a striking freshwater cichlid native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. This species is known for its brilliant golden-yellow body with electric blue facial markings, making it a standout in Haplochromis and Peacock cichlid aquariums. Males display the most intense coloration, while females and juveniles have a more muted, silver-toned appearance.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Goldfin Borleyi Haps inhabit rocky shorelines and sandy substrates, where they feed on plankton and small invertebrates carried by water currents. Unlike the rock-dwelling mbuna cichlids, they prefer open swimming areas and are less aggressive, making them ideal for mixed Hap and Peacock cichlid tanks.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Goldfin Borleyi Hap thrives in a well-structured tank with rock formations, sandy substrate, and plenty of open swimming space. They should be housed with other semi-aggressive African cichlids, such as Peacocks and other Haplochromis species. Males can become territorial during breeding, so providing ample hiding spots and rock caves helps reduce aggression.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 15–18 cm (6–7 inches), the Goldfin Borleyi Hap requires a large, well-filtered aquarium with stable water conditions. Its brilliant golden body, peaceful yet confident temperament, and active swimming behavior make it a favorite among African cichlid keepers.
