Description
The Usisya Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp. “Usisya”) is a stunning freshwater species from Lake Malawi in East Africa, known for its deep electric blue body with metallic highlights and contrasting yellow or orange accents. As a member of the Peacock Cichlid family, it is prized for its vibrant coloration, relatively peaceful temperament, and active swimming behavior.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Usisya Peacocks inhabit sandy-bottomed regions near rocky formations, where they sift through the sand to find small invertebrates. Unlike the highly aggressive mbuna cichlids, Peacocks are less territorial and prefer open swimming spaces with occasional digging and foraging. Males display the most intense colors, while females tend to be more subdued.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Usisya Peacock thrives in a well-structured tank with sandy substrate, rock formations, and ample swimming space. While they are less aggressive than mbuna, males can be territorial, especially during breeding. They should be housed with other non-aggressive to semi-aggressive Lake Malawi cichlids, such as other Peacocks or Haplochromis species.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches), the Usisya Peacock Cichlid is best suited for medium to large aquariums with strong filtration and stable water conditions. Its electric blue hues, graceful swimming, and interactive personality make it a prized species for African cichlid enthusiasts.
