Description
The Fire Eel (Mastacembelus erythrotaenia) is a large and visually stunning spiny eel species native to the slow-moving rivers, lakes, and floodplains of Southeast Asia, including regions of Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Its elongated body features a dark brown to black base color, beautifully accented with vibrant red or orange markings that resemble flames, giving it its name.
A master burrower, the Fire Eel spends much of its time hidden in soft substrates or under driftwood, emerging primarily at night to forage for food. Its diet consists of worms, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates. In the wild, it thrives in sandy or muddy environments with plenty of submerged vegetation.
In aquariums, the Fire Eel requires a large tank with a soft substrate, ample hiding places, and subdued lighting to mimic its natural habitat. A secure lid is essential, as it is an adept escape artist. While generally peaceful, it may eat small tankmates, so it is best kept with similarly sized or larger fish. With proper care, this striking and interactive species can be a centerpiece in a well-maintained aquarium.
