The Featherfin Synodontis (Synodontis eupterus), also known as the Featherfin Squeaker, is a unique and beautifully patterned freshwater catfish native to the rivers and lakes of Central and West Africa, particularly in the Niger, Volta, and Chad river basins. Named for its impressive, elongated dorsal fin that resembles a feather and its ability to produce squeaking sounds when out of the water, this species is both fascinating and hardy, making it a popular choice among aquarists.
In the wild, Featherfin Synodontis inhabit slow-moving waters with sandy or muddy substrates and plenty of submerged roots and driftwood. They are nocturnal bottom-dwellers, foraging for small invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus.
In aquariums, the Featherfin Synodontis thrives in a well-decorated tank with a soft substrate and plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and rocks to mimic its natural environment. Though generally peaceful, they can be territorial with other bottom-dwellers, so adequate space is necessary. They do well in community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.
Growing to about 20?25 cm (8?10 inches), the Featherfin Synodontis is a moderately large species suitable for medium to large aquariums. Its intricate patterning, impressive fins, and hardy nature make it an excellent choice for aquarists looking for an active and visually striking bottom-dweller.
