Description

The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a dazzling and peaceful freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. Known for its iridescent rainbow coloration, flowing fins, and shimmering scales, this tetra brings a vibrant, elegant presence to any community aquarium.

Habitat and Behavior

In the wild, Congo Tetras inhabit soft, slightly acidic waters rich in vegetation and tannins, where they swim in large schools and feed on small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. They are active, social fish that thrive in groups of six or more, and their schooling behavior is both calming and captivating to watch.

Aquarium Care

In aquariums, the Congo Tetra thrives in a well-planted tank with open swimming space, dim lighting, and a dark substrate to enhance its colors. They do best with gentle filtration and soft, clean water, mimicking their natural environment. Congo Tetras are peaceful and compatible with other calm, non-nippy tankmates such as rainbowfish, Corydoras, and peaceful cichlids like keyholes or Kribensis.

Size and Suitability

Congo Tetras are larger than most tetras, growing to about 7.5–9 cm (3–3.5 inches), and are best suited for medium to large aquariums. Their brilliant iridescence, flowing fins (especially in males), and gentle schooling nature make them a favorite among aquarists looking for a stunning centerpiece schooling fish.
