The Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus), also known as the Banded Panchax or Rocket Killifish, is a small and vibrant freshwater species native to the slow-moving streams, swamps, and marshes of West Africa, particularly in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Known for its bold black and yellow banding and striking red or blue-tipped tail, this fish resembles a tiny rocket, making it a highly sought-after species in nano aquariums.
In the wild, Clown Killifish inhabit shallow, plant-filled waters with soft, acidic conditions where they feed on small insects, micro-crustaceans, and zooplankton. As a surface-dwelling species, they rely on their upturned mouths to capture prey at the water’s surface.
In aquariums, the Clown Killifish thrives in a heavily planted tank with floating plants, gentle filtration, and subdued lighting to mimic its natural environment. They are peaceful and best kept in small groups, making them excellent candidates for nano aquariums or community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species such as pygmy Corydoras, small rasboras, and shrimp.
Growing to about 3–4 cm (1.5 inches), the Clown Killifish is an ideal choice for small aquariums. Its striking colors, peaceful nature, and fascinating surface-feeding behavior make it a favorite among aquarists who enjoy keeping nano fish in well-planted setups.
