Description
The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a stunning and highly popular freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers, streams, and blackwater tributaries of the Amazon Basin in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. Known for its vibrant, iridescent blue stripe running along its body, complemented by a striking, vivid red stripe that extends from head to tail, the Cardinal Tetra adds a brilliant splash of color to any aquarium. In the wild, Cardinal Tetras inhabit soft, acidic waters rich in tannins, often shaded by dense overhanging vegetation. They thrive in these dimly lit environments and feed on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and plant matter. In aquariums, Cardinal Tetras thrive in well-planted tanks with subdued lighting, soft substrates, and plenty of hiding spots created with driftwood, rocks, and dense aquatic plants to mimic their natural habitat. As schooling fish, they should be kept in groups of at least six, preferably more, to reduce stress and display their natural, synchronized swimming behavior. They are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other non-aggressive species like Corydoras, dwarf gouramis, and small tetras.Growing to about 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches), the Cardinal Tetra is ideal for small to medium-sized community aquariums. Its vibrant colors, peaceful temperament, and active schooling behavior make it a favorite among aquarists, especially in planted or blackwater tanks where its brilliant hues stand out beautifully.
