The Blue Turquoise Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus hybrid) is a classic and highly admired variety of Discus, known for its vibrant blue body with flowing turquoise striations that ripple across its flanks, fins, and face. This selectively bred strain is a favorite among Discus enthusiasts for its striking coloration, graceful swimming, and calm demeanor.

Habitat and Behavior

Discus fish originate from the soft, warm, and slow-moving blackwater rivers of the Amazon Basin, where they dwell among submerged roots and leaf litter. The Blue Turquoise is a domesticated variety, selectively bred for its vibrant hues. Like all Discus, it is a social and peaceful fish that thrives in groups of five or more and develops complex social hierarchies.

Aquarium Care

In aquariums, the Blue Turquoise Discus does best in a well-maintained, planted tank with gentle filtration, soft substrate, and warm, soft, slightly acidic water. They benefit from shaded areas created with driftwood and tall plants, along with open spaces for swimming. Water quality is critical, and they require frequent water changes and a stable environment free from stress and sudden fluctuations. Ideal tankmates include peaceful species like cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras, and Corydoras catfish.

Size and Suitability

Growing to about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches), the Blue Turquoise Discus is a great choice for aquarists with some experience managing sensitive species. Its brilliant blue hues, serene personality, and elegant appearance make it a standout in any aquascape.
