Black Widow Tetra

Description

The Black Widow Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi), also known as the Black Skirt Tetra, is a hardy and popular freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly in Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina. Recognized for its deep-bodied shape and striking black and silver coloration, this species is a favorite among aquarists for its peaceful temperament and active schooling behavior.
In the wild, Black Widow Tetras inhabit soft, acidic waters with dense vegetation, where they feed on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and plant matter. Their natural schooling behavior helps them stay safe from predators while foraging.
In aquariums, Black Widow Tetras thrive in a well-planted tank with soft substrates, driftwood, and plenty of open swimming space. They prefer subdued lighting, which enhances their coloration and mimics their natural environment. As schooling fish, they should be kept in groups of at least six to reduce stress and encourage natural interactions. Their peaceful nature makes them excellent companions for other small, non-aggressive species like tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and gouramis.
Growing to about 5-6 cm (2-2.5 inches), the Black Widow Tetra is ideal for small to medium-sized community aquariums. Its striking appearance, active behavior, and hardy nature make it a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for a lively and elegant schooling fish.
