Description
The Black Ruby Barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is a stunning and lively freshwater fish native to the slow-moving streams and rivers of Sri Lanka. Known for its deep black body with vibrant ruby-red hues in males, this species is highly sought after for its striking coloration and energetic schooling behavior.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Black Ruby Barbs inhabit soft, slightly acidic waters with dense vegetation, where they form active schools and forage for small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. Males display their most intense red coloration during spawning and when kept in optimal conditions.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Black Ruby Barb thrives in a well-planted tank with a soft substrate, open swimming areas, and moderate water flow. They are social schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to encourage natural behaviors and reduce fin-nipping tendencies. Their ideal tankmates include other fast-moving or similarly sized fish, such as danios, rasboras, and larger tetras.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 6–7 cm (2.5–3 inches), the Black Ruby Barb is an excellent choice for medium-sized aquariums. Its dynamic coloration, active schooling behavior, and hardy nature make it a fantastic choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
