Description

The Black Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a bold and striking freshwater cichlid native to the slow-moving rivers, lakes, and floodplains of South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco basins. This variation of the Oscar features a sleek, dark body often accented with subtle patterns of red or orange, giving it an elegant and mysterious appearance.

Known for their intelligence and interactive nature, Black Oscars quickly recognize their keepers and can even be trained to take food from your hand. In the wild, they prey on small fish, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods, and occasional treats like shrimp or earthworms will help them thrive and maintain their striking appearance.

Black Oscars require a spacious tank of at least 300 liters, as they can grow up to 30-35 cm in length. Their aquarium should have a sandy substrate, sturdy decor like rocks and driftwood, and ample swimming space. Warm water with stable conditions and moderate filtration is essential. While they are generally peaceful, Black Oscars can become territorial, particularly during breeding, so tankmates should be similarly sized and robust. With proper care, these magnificent fish can live for over a decade, making them a rewarding addition to any aquarium.
