Description

The Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is one of the most iconic and elegant freshwater fish, known for its tall, laterally compressed body, long flowing fins, and graceful swimming behavior. Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon Basin in South America, Angelfish are prized for their striking appearance and peaceful yet slightly territorial nature.
In the wild, Angelfish inhabit soft, acidic waters with dense vegetation, where their vertical bodies allow them to maneuver effortlessly among submerged plants and roots. They are omnivores, feeding on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and plant matter.
In aquariums, Angelfish thrive in a well-decorated tank with tall plants, driftwood, and vertical structures that mimic their natural habitat. A calm environment with a soft substrate and gentle water flow is ideal. While generally peaceful, they can become mildly territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with non-aggressive tankmates such as tetras, Corydoras, or other similarly sized, peaceful fish.
Growing up to 15 cm (6 inches) in body height and 20 cm (8 inches) including their fins, Angelfish require a medium to large aquarium with ample swimming space. Their graceful movements, striking colors, and interactive nature make them a favorite among aquarists, particularly in community or planted tanks where their beauty can truly shine.
