Description

The African Butterfly Cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi) is a small, peaceful West African cichlid known for its delicate appearance and subtle beauty. Often overlooked in favor of more colorful species, this cichlid is a hidden gem for aquarists who appreciate natural behavior, subdued iridescence, and a calm temperament.

Habitat and Behavior

Native to the slow-moving, leaf-littered streams and rivers of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea, the African Butterfly Cichlid thrives in shaded, acidic waters filled with plants, roots, and decaying organic matter. In the wild, it feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and biofilm. These cichlids are peaceful and shy, especially compared to many of their African relatives, and do best in pairs or small groups.

In aquariums, they prefer a natural, dimly lit setup with fine sand, leaf litter, driftwood, and dense planting. African Butterfly Cichlids are substrate spawners and attentive parents, often forming monogamous pairs that care for their eggs and fry. They are compatible with small, peaceful tankmates like tetras, rasboras, and dwarf catfish.
