Description
Threadfin Acara (Acarichthys heckelii)
The Threadfin Acara, also known as the Heckelii Cichlid, is a graceful and peaceful South American cichlid admired for its long, trailing fin extensions and shimmering silver body marked with subtle iridescent spangles and dark facial markings. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, this species stands out as a more tranquil and elegant alternative to larger, more aggressive cichlids.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Threadfin Acaras inhabit slow-moving rivers, creeks, and floodplain lakes with sandy or muddy bottoms and plenty of leaf litter and submerged branches. They are often found in areas with soft, acidic water and minimal current, where they sift through the substrate for small invertebrates and organic debris. They are substrate spawners, forming bonded pairs and displaying excellent parental care.
Aquarium Care
In the aquarium, Threadfin Acaras thrive in spacious, well-decorated tanks with sand or fine gravel substrate, driftwood, rockwork, and plant cover. They are generally peaceful and make excellent community fish, especially when kept with similarly calm species such as Severums, Geophagus, or larger tetras. They do not uproot plants and can be kept in groups or pairs, though males may become mildly territorial during breeding.
Size and Suitability
Reaching up to 20 cm (8 inches), these cichlids are medium-sized and relatively undemanding, making them ideal for aquarists who want a visually striking centerpiece fish without the aggression often seen in other large cichlids.
