Description

The Freiberg’s Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp. “Freibergi”) is a stunning and rare freshwater species from Lake Malawi in East Africa. This Peacock Cichlid is prized for its iridescent blue and golden hues, striking finnage, and peaceful yet active nature, making it a standout choice for African cichlid enthusiasts.
Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Freiberg’s Peacock Cichlids inhabit sandy-bottomed areas with scattered rocks, where they use their specialized sensory pores to detect small invertebrates hidden in the substrate. Unlike the aggressive mbuna cichlids, Peacocks are less territorial and prefer open-water swimming while occasionally sifting through the sand for food.
Aquarium Care
In aquariums, the Freiberg’s Peacock Cichlid thrives in a well-structured setup with sandy substrate, rock formations, and open swimming space. While they are less aggressive than mbuna cichlids, males can become territorial, especially during breeding. They are best housed with other non-aggressive to semi-aggressive Lake Malawi cichlids, such as other Peacocks or Haps.
Size and Suitability
Growing to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches), Freiberg’s Peacock Cichlid is best suited for medium to large aquariums with strong filtration and stable water conditions. Its vibrant coloration, graceful swimming, and interactive personality make it a prized species among African cichlid keepers.
