Description

The Molly (Poecilia spp.) is a hardy and adaptable freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers, coastal brackish waters, and swamps of North and South America. Available in a variety of colors and fin shapes, Mollies are popular for their active behavior, livebearing reproduction, and ease of care, making them an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
In the wild, Mollies inhabit warm, plant-rich environments where they graze on algae, small invertebrates, and organic debris. They are omnivores with a strong preference for plant-based foods.
In aquariums, Mollies thrive in a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming space. They are social fish that do best in groups and can be kept with other peaceful community species such as tetras, Corydoras, and swordtails. While generally peaceful, males may display mild aggression toward one another. Mollies also prefer slightly hard, alkaline water, and they can even tolerate brackish conditions.
Growing to about 6–12 cm (2.5–5 inches), depending on the variety, Mollies are best suited for medium to large aquariums. Their bright colors, energetic nature, and livebearing reproduction make them a fascinating and rewarding species for aquarists of all levels.
