Description
The Redhump Eartheater (Geophagus steindachneri) is a fascinating and visually striking freshwater cichlid native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of Colombia and Venezuela. This species is named for the prominent red nuchal hump that males develop as they mature, along with their sand-sifting behavior, which is characteristic of the Eartheater family.
In the wild, Redhump Eartheaters inhabit soft, sandy substrates where they sift through the sediment in search of small invertebrates, plant matter, and organic debris. Their natural environment consists of warm, slightly acidic waters with submerged roots and dense vegetation.
In aquariums, the Redhump Eartheater thrives in a well-decorated tank with soft, sandy substrate, driftwood, and rocks to provide shelter and encourage natural foraging behavior. They are generally peaceful cichlids, though males can become territorial during breeding. Ideal tankmates include other peaceful cichlids, tetras, Corydoras, and other non-aggressive fish.
Growing to about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches), the Redhump Eartheater is an excellent choice for medium to large aquariums. Its unique red head hump, sand-sifting behavior, and interactive personality make it a captivating species for aquarists looking for a peaceful yet dynamic cichlid that adds both movement and character to a community or species-specific setup
