Description

The Yellow African Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp.), often referred to as the Yellow Sunshine Peacock or simply Sunshine Peacock, is a vibrant freshwater species native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. It is known for its brilliant golden-yellow coloration, often with subtle blue highlights on the face and fins, especially in dominant males. This striking color, combined with a peaceful temperament, makes it one of the most popular Peacock Cichlid varieties among hobbyists.

Habitat and Behavior

In their natural environment, Peacock Cichlids like the Yellow variant inhabit sandy-bottomed regions with scattered rocks, where they forage by sifting through the sand for small invertebrates. They are less aggressive than mbuna cichlids and are more suited to open-water swimming with occasional interaction with the substrate.

Aquarium Care

In aquariums, the Yellow African Peacock thrives in a spacious tank with a sandy substrate, rock formations for cover, and plenty of open swimming space. Males can be territorial during breeding, so it’s best to provide multiple hiding spots to reduce conflict. They should be kept with other non-aggressive to semi-aggressive Malawi cichlids, such as other Peacocks and Haps.

Size and Suitability

Growing to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches), the Yellow African Peacock is best suited for medium to large aquariums with excellent filtration and consistent water quality. Its glowing yellow body, peaceful behavior, and active nature make it a visually stunning and rewarding addition to African cichlid setups.
